Reiner Knizia's Through the Desert HD App Reviews

Great light strategy game nicely rendered by Tribeflame

I own the board game and enjoy it with my family. The app is a faithful replica of the board game in all respects. The January 2013 update supports the retina display which is much appreciated. It is nice that I can play against friends in the Game Center too. I think I lose more often to the AI than Id like, so it is great fun when I beat it! Highly recommended.

Nicely done.

A well designed (possibly over designed) version of a classic euro game. It hung up a couple of times on the initial boot but has played flawlessly since. My only complaint is the zooming back and forth "feature". Its a bit tiring. Also the drag and drop works but it seems an odd choice vs. tap and tap.

Cant see placements

In a game which revels in the placement of pieces, not being able to adequately control where pieces are placed is a gross oversight. Everything else isnt too shabby, nothing spectacular but no glaring mistakes. All in all, an adequate port. Until the placing is fixed I cant see myself playing too often. The game is fantastic! The app, simply "meh"with a side of unnecessarily frustrating.

Solid game that is just like the tabletop version.

This is a good, solid game of strategy that is simple and abstract. Fun! I think it could be improved by the following however: 1. Add statistics for human players and let them name their player. 2. Give a "Are you sure?" message for when your placement will end the game. As it stands, it is really easy to accidentally drop a camel in the wrong spot. Ive had a couple of games end prematurely just because of the touchy and fiddly nature of moving your camels from the supply to the board. 3. An undo button would be nice too!

Excellent interpretation!

I love playing Through The Desert, its just as much fun and true to the original game. Its almost perfect, except at the Game Center there is never anyone to play with - I wish it would let me start a game in the Game Center and then find someone to play with, instead of having to start a game and sit there waiting and no one ever shows up, that never happens with another game I have (Ticket To Ride).

Simple Complexity

Like all of the truly great classic games (like go or chess), the complexity isnt in the move itself, but in foreseeing the future implications of the move. There is no element of chance. Each players future is in his own hands. An outstanding strategy game.

Not the first to say it.

This app is badly marred by not having any kind of undo or move confirmation feature. Otherwise good.

Developers please, PLEASE add an option to speed up animations

Thats all I ask. The port is quite good except for this one annoyance.

A few points...

Nearly a five star port, except for a few issues: - An "Undo" feature is a MUST, esp. on such a small screen. - The animation speed is rather slow, esp. at scoring. - A simple double-tap spot zoom system would be nice, but not necessary.

Solid implementation but AI is lacking

I never played this but have now won 2 of 3 four-player games against the hard AI. They dont recognize threats to wall off extensive territory. The implementation of the game is great though. Ill give online play a try sometime.

Good game

Pretty good game, needs undo or confirm button. And needs to better match players online, so you dont have to be on at the same time to get a game started. Have not been able to start a game in many tries.

Great port,could be better.

This is an excellent port of a beautiful strategy game,However the A.I is far to weak even to the point of not recognizing game winning moves and threats(such as large area enclosing).Amp up the difficulty and A.I. and this would be 5 stars

If youre into complex board games, this may be good

Far to obscure and boardgame-y. Certainly too complex, too confusing for a casual game. The "desert" theme is just a them for a tile placement board game: theres no simulation of a Saharan caravan going on here. Unless youre someone who has played and enjoyed this board game, I would avoid it. I wish I had.
